It’s proven that UGC creators have higher engagement than macro influencers and celebrities. This is because customers care about consuming content that feels deeply personal, genuine, and well researched.
Customers are able to identify when an influencer is shilling product on a daily basis for a paycheck and there’s often viewer fatigue around endless PR hauls.

The brands I work with don’t hire me for my built-in social media following.
They hire me to produce content that they will post and run as targeted ads from their page.
Oftentimes they prefer that I'm a less familiar face because I'm more likely to be a perceived as a real customer (most of the time, I am 😊).

UGC partnerships that involve expert creators being paid by a brand is a common practice. Depending on who you ask, some advertisers also consider unpaid, unaffiliated content that a customer created for fun as UGC as well.
There is an underlying sentiment that the days of solely relying on reposting customer made content without compensating them for ads are dwindling as the ethics in doing so can be murky and preserving your brand image and having quality content can be difficult to be achieved by this method.
